For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be subject again to the yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

It was warm enough. It was warm enough for flip- flops today. It seems that it has taken a long time for spring weather to arrive. A change of footwear can radically change your perspective. The very ordinary move from socks and closed shoes to flip-flops or other sandals is something that happens every year, but it frees us to something so much more. It is more than changing footwear. It is inviting the possibility of a new season. Sometimes we need to invite possibilities into our lives as well. The changing of the footwear makes me feel a little wild, a little more free. I think that is one of the things I like about spring and summer footwear.

Often we feel locked in and closed up. We feel, for a variety of reasons, that we cannot just be free. We must tuck in our personalities, our thoughts and our feelings, because of our own insecurities, social conventions, others’ insecurities, or just because we don’t actually know what it is to be freed from the things that hold us back. No matter what the reason, we have the opportunity to be free. Jesus Christ offers us freedom from whatever binds us or holds us back.

In order to experience freedom, we have to be willing to take off the yoke that binds us, or the thing that keeps us all tied up and under wraps or socks. We need to face the fears of what might happen when we expose a part of our true selves. Take a chance to be a little more exposed, to be the person God created you to be. Take the chance to experience more freedom. I’ve got on my flip- flops and everyone can see my bright red toenail polish. I’m experiencing a taste of spring freedom and celebrating the freedom we all have in Christ. What are you wearing?
