Standing Up

There are a number of songs about wanting or needing another person to stand by us. It is true that we all need someone to stand by us and with us, but I wonder about our own strength to stand. Yes, it helps to have someone who is right there with us, but there are things that we must face alone. The internal emotions, the personal struggles, and the physical ailments we suffer and must endure. The support helps, but no one knows what we are going through. Those who stand by us can support us, but there are times we need to stand on our own.

We need to be ready for these times. We need to be fortified so that when the storms of life come, we can stand. We are fortified in body, mind, heart, and spirit. In fortifying our spirit, we must build and maintain a connection to God. This connection is often more difficult to maintain in the good and easy times rather than in the hard times. We often are able to cling to God in the trying times of life, but often our spiritual strength comes from clinging to God in the ordinary times as well. By fortifying our spiritual life, we are better able to stand when the storms of life come. We have already been doing the work that needs to be done so that we know God’s presence. We already have a fortified spirit because God has been at work in and through us to build us up.

Strengthen your spirit by prayer. Spend time with God, acknowledging God’s work in the world as the creator, redeemer, and sustainer of all. Be present, in order to receive God’s gift of strength, encouragement, and grace. Praise God in word, song, and deed. Grow strong in spirit by serving God’s kingdom.

May you be able to stand when the storms of life come raging. May you know God’s peace now and always. Be blessed.
