Rest

resting

Do you know how to rest?  I thought I did, but I am learning that rest is something that I do not really understand.  Yes, I know how to sleep.  I rarely have trouble sleeping, but do you know how to rest when you have enough sleep?  Do you know how to just be without doing anything?  Some refer to this as a state as “increased calmness”.

Jesus offers increased calmness or rest in Matthew 11:28.  We find that in coming to Jesus, we can put our stress and frustrations onto Jesus as well as find acceptance.  Just our being us without doing anything is enough for Jesus.  It should be enough for us as well.  We do not have to be doing for ourselves or others all of the time.  We can find ways to simply rest when we need it.

Jesus offers us this increased calmness, peace, or rest.  It is acceptance of who we are without doing anything.  It is knowing that we are loved unconditionally and completely.  We do not have to do anything to earn this love.  All we need to do is come to Jesus and accept what is offered.  When was the last time you went to Jesus, without a plan or agenda, and accepted grace.  When was the last time that you spent time allowing God’s grace to wash over you and spread through you?  Part of my learning to rest is spending time receiving God’s grace.  Maybe you need to learn this type of resting in God’s presence as well.  Be at rest.

Matthew 11:28:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
