Most of us have probably heard about the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship that keeled off the coast of Italy.  The captain, Francesco Schettino, was detained.  He is now under house arrest and facing criminal charges.  According to transcripts of his conversations with Capt. Gregorio De Falco of the Italian coast guard, the cruise ship captain left the ship with passengers on board.  Then he appears to have refused to go back on the ship to identify how many people were left on the ship.  We will hear more about the case.  I wonder if the captain was distracted from his role.  It seems that the captain of the ship is responsible for the ship and its passengers.

We all have distractions in our lives.  There are things that take our focus and attention from the things that matter most.  One thing that helps us keep our focus is to remember what our job is.  When we remember what our role is, it is a lot easier to perform our role.  What is your role?  Most of us have a lot of roles in our lives. We wear many hats and have multiple responsibilities.  Each of us has to determine our particular role.

As Christians we are clearly given our role.  Jesus tells us that we should love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  Also, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves.  We are to love God, love ourselves, and love our neighbors.  If we can remember that our role is to love God, neighbor and self, then maybe we would deal with the incidents f our life in a different way.  Maybe we would react to the neighbor in traffic a different way, see the clerk at the grocery store as our neighbor, or re-evaluate our time management.

Your role is to love.  Love God, love  your neighbor, and love your self.
